Framing of alcohol in the Czech press and its comparison in the period before and during COVID-19 pandemic
Andresek, Šimon ; Nečas, Vlastimil (advisor) ; Jirák, Jan (referee)
The diploma thesis focuses on how the topic of alcohol consumption was framed in the Czech press in two subsequent periods: 2018-2019 and 2020-2021. The emphasis is put on comparing the findings from both research periods, both in terms of frames and other variables studied, such as the topic, the source cited, or the relationship between the sex of the protagonists and the narrative(s) present. The theoretical part of the thesis discusses the influence of media content on public sphere, through the description of the phenomenon of agenda-setting. Then the framing itself is presented, both through the perspective of the agenda-setting theory (as a subset of it), but also as a completely autonomous phenomenon. Different perspectives on framing are presented which are then illustrated with several spatiotemporally distinct studies that address the media framing of alcohol use. The analytical part consists of two methodological components - qualitative and quantitative content analysis. First, qualitative content analysis is used in order to find and describe issue-specific frames at the forefront of the generic conflict frame. Subsequently, the presence of the described specific conflict narratives in both research periods is quantified and the findings are compared. The results suggest that alcohol...
Media representation of LGBTQ+ community: comparative study of selected Czech and Slovak press
Hlinka, Ivan ; Osvaldová, Barbora (advisor) ; Končelík, Jakub (referee)
The upcoming democratic regime and the liberalization of society related to the gentle revolution gave queer people the courage to try to claim their place in society. Despite the efforts of activists, equality of LGBTQ+ people with the rest of society have not been achieved even after thirty years. The situation is worse in Slovakia, where only 31% of residents hold the opinion that the queer community deserves these rights. This diploma thesis focuses on the media representation of the LGBTQ+ community in the Czech and Slovak periodicals between 1993 and 2022, while comparative content analysis is used as a research method. The first two chapters introduce the theoretical foundations. They present a way of communicating LGBTQ+ topics, basic terms, community development in Slovakia and the Czech Republic, and an overview of research conducted on the topic of media representation of queer people. In the next part, the concepts of media theory are explained. The third chapter deals with work methodologies, where the goal of the thesis, research questions, hypotheses and variables are determined. The last two chapters present the data obtained by analysis, data comparison and answers to the set questions. The result of the work was the discovery of positive trends, such as the growing importance that...
Journalists' approach to representing female politicians in the media
Kvitová, Alžběta ; Vochocová, Lenka (advisor) ; Křeček, Jan (referee)
The thesis focuses on gender aspects of the journalistic profession and their professional discourse. Specifically, it focuses on how people in the media approach representations of female politicians. Women in politics are gender stereotyped in the media, and they also tend to be portrayed differently and in different contexts compared to male politicians. This is manifested, for example, by the fact that people in the media pay more attention to the private lives of female politicians, focusing more on their physical appearance or their age. Therefore, the aim of this paper was to investigate how these different representations of women in politics may be contributed to by journalists themselves. As part of the research part, semi-structured interviews were conducted with eleven female and male journalists working in different Czech media. The collected data were analysed qualitatively using the grounded theory method. The research shows that journalists attach low importance to gender in political reporting. Therefore, the gender of female and male politicians does not influence the way they themselves are reported in the media. However, the results of the analysis suggest that they view society through the lens of a gender dichotomy and also think of female politicians in gender stereotyped...
Postcolonial photographic representations of Global South in the context of environmental disasters: The Haiti case
Kotvalová, Lucie ; Hrůzová, Andrea (advisor) ; Silverio, Robert (referee)
The present thesis examines the media representation of Haitian men and women in the context of environmental disasters from a postcolonial perspective. The work builds on the work of postcolonial authors such as Edward Said, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, Walter Mignolo, Aníbal Quijano and Gurminder K. Bhambra, according to whom the system of power formed during the colonial period did not end with the formal independence of the former colonies, but transcends this imaginary boundary and materializes to this day through various pathways and processes, termed coloniality. It is precisely the possible continuity of contemporary forms of representation with colonial narratives that the thesis traces in three media discourses - the British media outlet The Guardian, the Czech server iDNES.cz and the Qatari media outlet Al Jazeera. Through a combination of social semiotic analysis applied to selected photographs and a discursive historical approach to critical discourse analysis used to deconstruct meanings in media texts, representations were analysed in the context of two Haitian natural disasters: the 2016 Hurricane Matthew and the 2021 earthquake. The research showed that modes of representation change in relation to the location from which they are formed and subsequently articulated, and are thus...

Stoklasová, Justýna ; Nečas, Vlastimil (advisor) ; Jirák, Jan (referee)
The diploma thesis deals with the framing of the protests of the Yellow Vests movement in France in some selected Czech news media. The focus is on a comparison of the way the protests were framed in articles published in traditional and new (press/online) media. The aim of the research is to use media framing analysis to determine whether, and in what way, the media representation of the yellow vest movement is influenced by the type of media (print/online) and whether the content of the articles has elements of the protest paradigm and bias against the yellow vest movement. In the theoretical part of the thesis, the theories of the influence of mass media on public opinion are first briefly introduced, especially the agenda setting theory. The theoretical part of the thesis first briefly introduces the theories of mass media influence on public opinion, in particular the theory of agenda-setting and the concept of media framing. This concept is put in the context of the protest paradigm phenomenon. This is followed by a brief description of theformation and and nature of the yellow vest movement and the different characteristics of traditional and new media. Finally, some previous studies on media coverage of protests are presented. The methodological section presents the research problem, the...
Female candidates: analysis of the media representation of "femininity" in the Czech presidential elections of 2023
Michvoková, Marie ; Vochocová, Lenka (advisor) ; Reifová, Irena (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to form an idea of the ways in which "feminine" is portrayed in the media in the Czech presidential elections in 2023. The representation of women in top Czech politics is still a minority and no woman has yet become president or prime minister. This fact does not mean that women are not as suitable for these positions as men. It means that they do not have equal opportunities in the public sphere, or rather they do not even dare to enter it. This stems from a patriarchal social order in which public sphere is adapted mainly to men. In the theoretical part of the work, I will therefore focus on the history of feminist movements and the present of feminist theories in the field of politics, the issue of women in top politics and the conceptualization of new media and their relationship with political communication. The methodological and analytical part will deal with the research of media representations. In 2023, only one woman ran in the presidential election - Danuše Nerudová. Based on an analysis of her official social media campaign, I will assess how she worked with the fact that she is a woman. The second part of the analysis will tell something about how this fact is portrayed by one serious and one tabloid media and whether it is somehow important to them. The...
Comparing media image of refugees in 2015 and 2022 in Czech Television
Křížová, Tereza ; Klásková, Markéta (advisor) ; Freidingerová, Tereza (referee)
This bachelor thesis compares media image of refugees in 2015 and 2022. The paradigm, upon which the thesis stands, is social constructivism. An important creator of reality within social constructivism is media. The image of refugees created in media, in two different crises, is the objective of the thesis. The media chosen for this was the public Czech Television, specifically the news broadcast Události, available to and watched by the general public. The created image influences the public opinion, through which it's able to generate society's views towards refugees, influencing the possibility of their integration. The reports are analysed through Ruth Wodak's discourse analysis method which allows to recognise used means of language. Based on the finding of the analysis, we can designate four main differences whilst speaking about refugees. These include naming of the refugees, responsibility of the Czech Republic within the two crises, situation at the border or context in which the refugees are situated. These differences show an overall contrast in the media image of these refugees. In 2015, the image created is significantly negative, refugees are presented as a threat from which we need to protect ourselves. In 2022 refugees are seen as victims, whom we need to aid from a humane...
Media Representation of Elderly in the Czech Press: Changes in the Context of the COVID-19 Pandemic
Folprechtová, Kamila ; Svobodová, Tereza (advisor) ; Jeřábek, Hynek (referee)
The bachelor thesis addresses the media representation of elderly in the Czech press and its transformation before, during, and "after" the COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic was a crucial period for the media representation of elderly, as seniors were identified as one of the most at-risk groups, age became the main determining variable of risk, and there was a great wave of ageism. The research was conducted using quantitative content analysis, and media articles (n=450) were manually coded. The chi-square test was used to evaluate statistical significance. The main finding is that in all periods, aging is associated more with negative sentiment, and during the pandemic, there were statistically significant changes in its representation. Older people were significantly less associated with positive sentiment during this period, and there was a considerable increase in ambivalent sentiment (positive and negative at the same time). During the pandemic, elderly were most associated with the theme of help and security, where seniors were portrayed as passive, sick, and incompetent, and therefore must rely on other active members of society. Stereotypical and distorted representation can lead to discrimination and marginalization of seniors, both during times of crisis and beyond, and therefore,...
